Tamas (Tommy) Buday Jr

Tamas Buday Jr or Tommy as he is often called, was born in Hungary, Budapest and lived there until he was 11 years old.  Tommy moved to Canada when his father Tamas Sr. became the Canadian National Canoe Coach in 1987. For the Buday family (including two brothers Attila and younger brother Peter) paddling was simply something the family did. Watching their dad compete for Hungary while they were young and learning that Tamas Sr. was a two time Olympic bronze medalist and 4 time World Champion gave the boys enough encouragement to get involved at a young age. Before they would join any paddling club they were already racing each other in their dad's boat!!!

Once in Canada they joined their local sprint canoe club in Mississauga where they would paddle for over 22 years.  This gave them a great start in making new paddling friends and learning to speak a whole new language!

Quickly Tommy made his way through the international ranks with Junior World Championships and graduating up to senior levels. In 1995 Tommy and brother Attila (Ati) started racing together as a team. They become one of the strongest doubles in Canada for over a decade. and after three Olympics and 3 silver medals from world championships the pair retired in 2008.

In the summer of 2015 the Tamas Buday Jr and his brother Attila were inducted into Mississauga's Sports Hall of Fame for their achievements in canoeing.

Tommy lives and works full time in Montreal for the City of Pointe-Claire at the Pointe-Claire Canoe Club as a Senior Development Coach. He works with young athletes and helps them reach their goals to provincial, national or international levels.

He is a full time Dad with two boys (Tristan and Liam) who each have as much energy as their father. The family is truly backboned by Tommy's wife Stephanie who "surprisingly" also use to train and race kayaks as well.  The world better be ready for the NEXT generation of Buday brothers come 2026!!
